The sight of your baby, warm n’ cozy and wrapped up snug-as-a-bug is a true treat to behold. Your senses being overloaded by cuteness, is a welcome side effect of swaddling your baby!
What Is Swaddling?
Swaddling is an age-old method of wrapping your baby in a thin breathable blanket, that is meant to imitate the sensation of being in the womb. The first step to calming a fussy baby is to give them a cozy hug. That’s exactly what swaddling does…embrace your baby.
Why You Need To Swaddle Your Baby
Swaddling serves the all-important purpose of helping your sweet pea stay calm and sleep more soundly. Here’s how:
The womb like embrace, makes your baby feel safe and secure
Swaddling helps prevent her from flailing its arms and legs
No more startle reflex or sudden awakening
Keeps your baby warm and regulates body temperature
Also, helps prevent SIDS
What You Need To Know
A few easy to remember things about swaddling are:
Always place your baby on its back while swaddling
Leave the baby’s face uncovered
Make sure there are no loose blankets or other objects in the crib
Swaddle your baby not too tight or too loose (Check if the baby is comfortable)
While these are some fairly important things to remember while swaddling your baby, the act of swaddling itself might seem a tad intimidating. So, here’s a step-by-step guide for how to swaddle a newborn baby.
How To Safely Swaddle Your Baby (Step-by-step guide)
The key to swaddling your baby right is to make sure you get the technique right. Here’s how you do it in 5 easy steps:
Step 1: Find a flat surface and spread out the swaddle blanket in the shape of a diamond.
Then fold the top corner down to the center of the blanket. This will help make the next steps far easier.
Step 2: Place your baby on its back
Make sure that you place your baby on the blanket face-up, with his/her head above the edge of the top fold, and the feet straight down towards the bottom corner.
Step 3: Pull the left corner over
Straighten your baby’s left arm carefully and pull the left corner of the blanket over your baby and tuck it under his/her right arm snugly. Your baby’s right arm will be free at this point.
Step 4: Pull the bottom corner over
As you attempt to pull the bottom corner of the blanket over your baby’s body and under his/her chin, make sure that it’s not too tight around the hips. Then fold the right corner of the blanket over on to the left side of your baby, tucked under. Loosely twist the bottom.
Step 5: Ensure all the folds are secure
Now that you’ve wrapped up your baby, just double check if it’s snug and not too tight.
Pro Tip: You should be able to place two fingers between your baby’s chest and the blanket.
If you feel that your baby likes having his/her arms free then just follow the above instructions with leaving the arms free. And always consult your pediatrician on swaddling and when to wean your little one off it.
Now that you’ve learned how to swaddle your baby like a pro, here are some recommendations for the perfect swaddle.
