10 Ways To Easily Pick Your Baby’s Name

  • By Abhinav

Are you struggling to find the perfect name for your baby that rolls off your tongue beautifully? Or trying to pick a name with substance? Well, know that you’re not alone in this struggle. Most new parents fall into the trap that is a ‘Trendy’ name. You don’t want to choose a name that sounds appealing at first but quickly turns into a mistake.

Luckily, there are 10 simple ways that you can make sure that you choose a name for your baby that you can be proud of. And of course, names that your children can thank you for later!

1. Avoid Trends

Thinking of naming your baby after your favorite actor or some other trending name? While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, you need to consider whether it is a good pick for your baby as they grow older.

Don’t fall for trends, just make sure that it’s relevant to you.

2. Don’t complicate it

There is nothing more frustrating than having to repeat your name over and over again to someone so they can understand, because your parents decided to add too many syllables in it.

Make it easy for people to say and remember the name.

3. Rely on your culture

It’s always a good idea to name a child after a beloved family member, or a name that reflects your own culture.

At the end of the day, classic names are always a safe bet!

4. Consider the nicknames, spelling & initials

A good name always carries significance, and that holds true for the nicknames, as well. So, pick a nickname as you would the actual name.

Similarly, make sure that the spelling of the name is not peculiar and that the initials don’t spell disaster for your child.

5. Unique is good

Be original! There is nothing wrong with choosing a unique or an uncommon name. Don’t be shamed into picking a name that you don’t want or one that you’ll regret.

Keeping in mind all the other tips on this list, there’s no reason not to choose a beautifully unique name.

6. A good meaning

A name that has a truly significant meaning will be remembered by all. It doesn’t have to be extraordinary or too simple, just a name that holds meaning to you, will do.

7. Consider the surname

Your child’s surname is not something you get to pick (in most cases anyway)! But fortunately, that isn’t true for the baby’s first and middle names.

Just as you would consider what the nickname, initials and the spelling would be, make sure to consider how the name you choose will sound together with the surname!

8. Consider the connotations

As much as you’d like to name the baby after a relative or a mythological figure or even a famous celebrity, consider the name’s negative connotations (if any).

Some parents tend to choose names from different cultures and languages, which is fine, as long as you thoroughly research the meaning and the connotations of the name.

9. Say it out loud

Do the first, middle and last names have a rhythmic flow when you say them out loud? You don’t want the name to rhyme too much or be too jarring.

Consider how it rolls off the tongue.

10. Do you and your family love the name?

While it’s important to pick a name that you’re happy with, it is equally important to make sure that your spouse is also happy with it.

A good way to find common ground is to each make a list of your favourite names. Then see if there are any names that appear on both your lists. And if all else fails, look to a family member or friends for help.

At the end of the day, you need to pick a name that you, your spouse and your family all love!

As with any important decision, picking the right baby name comes with it’s own set of challenges. Hopefully, our 10 suggestions will help you in making that decision without stressing too much .
